회장 인사말
안녕하십니까?
2021년 저에게 IKEN 회장이라는 중요한 직책을 맡겨 주신 것을 감사하게 생각합니다. 2010년 IKEN이 첫
출범을 한 이래 한국어교육의 발전을 위해 쉬지않고 불철주야 달려왔습니다. 지난 10년 IKEN 이 미주 한국어
교육에 커다란 족적을 남긴 한 시대를 뒤돌아 보며 벅찬 마음으로 10년 뒤의 IKEN을 상상해 봅니다.
IKEN회장으로 저는 다음과 같은 일에 힘쓰고자 합니다.
첫째, 지난 10년 동안 IKEN 이 개발 보급해 온 KECOS-IKEN 한국어 온라인 프로그램을 지속적으로 보완
수정하여 전 미주와 세계에 퍼트리고자 합니다. 한편 KECOS 의 UCOP 승인도 꾸준히 추진하겠습니다. 한편
KECOS 온라인 코스를 사용하는 한국어 온라인반 개설과 한국어교사 연수도 계속 노력하겠습니다.
팬데믹으로 인하여 한걸음 빨리 찾아온 한국어 온라인 교육은 단기적으로 위기처럼 보였지만 장기적으로는
기회임을 입증해 줄 것입니다.
둘째, NEWL 한국어 시험 보급에 박차를 가하여 SAT II 페지로 인한 혼란의 여파를 극복하고 온라인
한국어국가시험 보급의 기회로 삼고자 합니다. IKEN에서는 2018년도에 출간한 NEWL 한국어시험 준비서
보급과 함께 프렙코스를 개발하여 더 많은 학생들에게 기회를 제공하고자 합니다. 한국어교사들에게 더 많은
NEWL 트레이닝 기회를 제공하겠습니다. NEWL 한국어 커리큘럼 개발에 착수하여 NEWL 한국어가 각
교육국에서 승인받고 AP 과목들과 똑같이 weighted course 가 될 수 있도록 교사들을 지원하겠습니다.
세째, IKEN 웹사이트를 통해 한국문화/사회 커리큘럼, 인종학과 문화 역사콘텐츠에 대한 수업과 자료를
공유하며, 한국어 교사, 대학교수, 그리고 다음 세대를 위해 헌신하고 있는 다른 교육단체들 간에 지속적으로
네트워크를 형성하는 일에 주력하겠습니다.
아무리 훌륭한 계획을 세운다 해도 혼자서는 할 수 없습니다. 지난 10년 동안 묵묵히 지원해 주시고 물심양면
도움을 아끼지 않으셨던 수지오 이사장님과 IKEN 이사님들, 로스앤젤레스 교육원 원장님과 스태프들,
총영사관과 여러 모습으로 IKEN 을 도와 주셨던 한국어 교사님들이 없었다면 불가능한 일들이었습니다.
진심으로 감사드리며 앞으로도 지속적인 지원 부탁드립니다.
IKEN 이 그동안 개발 보급해 온 온라인 프로그램들과 한국어연수와 한국바로알리기프로젝트들은 미주 한국어
교육 발전에 한 축을 이루었고 앞으로 더욱 공고한 기반으로 발전할 것을 약속드립니다. 감사합니다.

Greetings from the IKEN president
How are you?
I appreciate that you gave me an important position as IKEN president in 2021. Since IKEN’s first
launch in 2010, it has been running nonstop for the development of Korean language education.
Looking back on an era that has left a great mark of IKEN on the Korean language education in the
past 10 years, I imagine IKEN’s future 10 years.
As president of IKEN, I would like to do the following.
First, we want to continue to supplement and revise the KECOS-IKEN Korean language online
program that IKEN has developed and distributed over the past 10 years to spread it to the U.S. and
the world. Meanwhile, we will continue to push for the KECOS’ UCOP approval. We will also continue
to work hard to open Korean online classes using KECOS online courses and Korean teacher
workshops. Korean online education, which came a step earlier due to Pandemic, seemed like a
crisis in the short term, but it will prove that it is an opportunity in the long term.
Secondly, we would like to accelerate the dissemination of the NEWL (National Examination for
World Languages) Korean language test to overcome the aftermath of the confusion caused by the
SAT II discontinuance and use it as an opportunity to distribute the online Korean language test.
IKEN wants to provide more students with opportunities participating in the NEWL Korean Prep
Course. IKEN also will provide the Korean teachers with more training workshops for NEWL Korean
test with the NEWL Korean Prep Book published in 2018. IKEN will start developing the NEWL
Korean language curriculum and support teachers so that NEWL Korean can be approved by each
school district and become the same weighted course as AP subjects.
Lastly, through the IKEN website, we will share classes and materials on Korean culture/society
curriculum, Ethnic Studies, and Korean history contents, and continue to build a network among
Korean language teachers, university professors, and other educational organizations who are
dedicated to the next generation.
No matter how good you plan, you can’t do it alone. It would not have been possible without
Chairwoman Dr. Suzie Oh, IKEN directors, the director of the Los Angeles Korean Education Center
and staff, the Los Angeles Consulate General and the Korean language teachers who helped IKEN in
many ways for the past 10 years. Thank you very much for your support in the past and in the future.
The online programs IKEN has developed and distributed, the Korean language Teachers
Conference and the Understanding Korea Project have been one of the pillars of the development of
Korean language education in the U.S. and we promise to develop into a more solid foundation in the
future.
